JOIN THE CONVERSATION Warm Up or Start Cold? Re: "The True Cost of Car Ownership," Fall 2013 MEMBER TOSHI OSHIMA: One of the points in the fuel section of this infographic was "Engine Temperature," and I was wondering if this means I should warm up my engine by idling for a while before I start driving. I thought it was more economical to warm up the engine by driving than by idling. Also, it was my understanding that newer cars didn't need idling, even when it's very cold. I'd appreciate it if you could clarify this. Chatter from Twitter @WestworldAB Hey #YEG & #YYC AMA members, have you been to #Hawaii? What do you do when there? AMA SAYS: A lot depends on the outside temperature. When it's –15 C or warmer, you can pretty much just start your car and let it warm up by driving. Colder than that, though, and you'll want to wait a little longer before you hit the road. Switching to synthetic motor oil and plugging in when temperatures are colder than –15 C will also go a long way toward keeping your vehicle in good running condition, and making sure you're ready to go in cold temperatures. Feelin' the iLove Member Phillippe Clairo: Great job on your iPad edition. It works really well and your articles are full of good tips. I read all of it this morning on my iPad mini and was delighted. Keep it up! WE'RE HAWAIIBOUND! Brad Vermeeren-Novak @YYCSpotter I've been to Maui numerous times and the Road to Hana is a must-do drive whenever I go. Michelle @mdenyse1 Been to Maui twice and plan on going back in 2015. Spectacular place! Snorkelling is the best for me. Brenda Bell @brendabell Went to Kauai in August! So many adventures.... Kayaking, zip lining, luau, catamaran tour, tube rides. Alexandra @SoupOftheDay We packed 11 people into a van on Oahu and made the most of 10 days. I even got engaged to my honey there! For more on Hawaii, turn to page 22. All Too Composed Re: "15 Simple Steps to Greener Living," Fall 2013 Member Deberah Kearns: The composting column was great, but I must add a comment about composting in St. Albert, Alta. Curbside composting is not available for thousands of residents who live in condos, townhouses and apartment complexes, and although there is a compost depot, I've been told I can't take my compostables there. I generate very little actual garbage unless I do a lot of food prep – but unfortunately peels, cores, seeds and other organic waste ends up in our dumpster. 6 w e s t w o r l d A l b e r tA | w i n t e r 2 0 13 p06-07JoinConversation.indd 6 13-10-15 9:45 AM
