Re: "Warm Up or Start Cold?"
Join the Conversation, Winter 2013
MEMBER CELESA HORVATH:
This letter reminded me to ask about parking in
heated garages in the winter. I've heard that this
is hard on a vehicle. Can you clarify the pros and
cons (besides the obvious benefit of not having
to clear snow off the car in the morning)?
AMA SAYS:
Thanks for your question. One downside to parking in a warm garage is that it can accelerate
the formation of rust. You can prevent this by washing your vehicle on a regular basis. Moving
a vehicle in and out of a warm space can also cause moisture to build up in the fuel tank.
Adding gas-line antifreeze when you fill up will help prevent this moisture from freezing.
