roadside Limo Scene by Kevin Brooker T erry Carter doesn't think of himself as an artist. "I'm more just a guy who likes to make people laugh," says the 51-year-old owner of a thriving auto salvage company in Lamont, northeast of Edmonton. That was his motivation in 2007 when he got two wrecked Lincoln limousines on the lot and decided to stage them as if mid-accident on his field out by Highway 831. Several stretch vehicles later, Carter re-jigged and created a "Lincoln Memorial" featuring three semi-buried cars, and a "tower" of one black and one white limo that he managed to stand upright in a hole using a backhoe and a length of chain. The display is a major stopping point for tourists driving into Elk Island National Park. "On sunny days, everyone's out there taking pictures," says Carter, who is content with the current arrangement but considering further installations. "I went to Stonehenge recently and I bought the book that includes all of the dimensions. Maybe one day I'll do a Carhenge with old collector cars from the '50s. Or maybe it will be school buses." However: "That's a project I'll probably save for my retirement." W 62 W e s t w o r l d a l b e r ta | S p r i n g 2 0 14 p62-63_Roadside.indd 62 mike heller 14-01-10 3:29 PM
