The area was settled in 1899 by Mormons who came from Utah to work on the Galt Irrigation Canal. They modelled Stirling on a traditional Mormon layout called the Plat of Zion, a 260-hectare grid with wide streets and four-hectare blocks, each divided into eight farmsteads. The best preserved of these is Michelsen Farmstead, which is now a museum and provincial historic site. If you're there over the first two weekends of December, stop in at the Stirling Victorian Christmas House (W.T. Ogden House) and warm up with a mug of hot chocolate or take a selfguided walking tour. stirling.ca –S.R. Vulcan, Energize! DID YOU KNOW? For the eighth year, this circa 1911 museum will be decked with sparkling ornaments and selling home-baked Christmas cookies (including gluten-free options). Attend the tea ($4) or stock up on butter shortbread, thimble cookies and more at the bake sale. But first, track down the spicy steamed Christmas pudding – made with locally grown carrots – because it sells out fast. And don't forget to pick up the Camrose Station Cookbook for recipes of the treats sold. canadiannorthern.ca –S.R. w i n t e r 2 0 13 | W e s t W o r l d a l b e r ta 9 13-10-15 9:46 AM
