we've got mail The Sign Says . . . Re: Roadside, "Neon on Whyte" (June 2012) I loved this short article in the June edition. As a young boy and teenager, I lived one block south of Southpark Motors – from 1947 until 1959. In the late '40s and early '50s, the lot to the east of Southpark was an empty grass fi eld, where we played baseball and football. One small correction for your story: Southpark Motors sold Pontiacs and Buicks. Oldsmo- biles and Cadillacs were sold at Hood Motors on 107 Street. –Pat L., Lethbridge, via email Share the Road, Not the Sidewalk Re: Behind the Wheel, "This Road is Our Road" (June 2012) Cyclists are the worst scoffl aws using our roads. Mounted cyclists are legally vehi- cles, yet they ride on sidewalks and cross- walks, and pedestrians are expected to get out of the way. It has been decades since I've seen a cyclist use the hand signals illustrated in the article. Sadly, cyclists' arrogance is being passed along by parents, who ride down the sidewalk with children in tow, teaching the next generation that the bicycle is supreme and exempt from the laws that govern mere mortal drivers. And Calgary is talking about spending money on bike lanes that will never be used by these roadway deities? –B.R. Harding, Calgary, via email Close-Door Policy Re: Toolkit, "Home Safe Home" (June 2012) The first couple of years after I came to Alberta from Ontario, I was doing early- morning delivery of the Calgary Herald. I was disturbed by how many homes had their front doors wide open at 3 a.m. – with not even the screen door latched. I was supposed to put the papers between the inside and outside doors, and I did – sort of. I would toss the paper as far into the house as possible, then grab the inside door and pull it closed. Someone else might not have been so careful with others' homes and property. –Patricia, posted on Westworld online Voluntour Honduras Re: "Five Volunteer Vacations" (June 2012) I really enjoyed Andrew Findlay's article in the June issue. I travelled to Honduras last spring with a Canadian charity, Healthy Horizons for Children and Families (healthyhorizonshonduras.ca). It runs trips regularly throughout the year. Aside from great food, wonderful people and amazing sights, we were involved in some really gratifying humanitarian proj- ects. We did a series of medical clinics in remote villages, bought supplies, did checkups for a group of children in an orphanage and built a few houses for fam- ilies in remote villages. It was a great expe- rience. I brought my 13-year-old son along and he thoroughly enjoyed it, too. –Jared Bly, Edmonton, via email Send your comments to: Letters, Westworld Alberta, Box 8180, Stn. A big thank-you to members who reached out to the organizations featured in June's "Volunteer Vacations" feature. AMA has been overwhelmed with phone calls from members asking how they can help around the world. We'd particularly like to thank the AMA member who made an anonymous donation to Casa Guatemala and the member who offered to fi ll a container of items for the children who live at the orphanage. We'd also like to thank all of the members who offered to become volunteer drivers for seniors as a result of our June 2012 "Keeping Seniors Mobile" story. Volunteer drivers are still needed across Alberta. If you're interested, email Caroline Gee: Caroline.Gee@ama.ab.ca.
