upfront TRAVEL, HOME, AUTO, MONEY — ama.ab.ca An Icon Returns (above) The original Capitol Theatre on Jasper Avenue; (right) the re-creation at Fort Edmonton Park. Gone is the oversized Union Jack. Gone are the 25-cent matinees and 18-piece orches- tra. But despite what's missing in the new Capitol Theatre, there are plenty of reasons to visit Fort Edmonton Park's newest attraction: a circa-1929 re-creation of the famous theatre that once graced Jasper Avenue. The new building, which sits on the park's 1920 Street, near the Hotel Selkirk, transports visitors back in time with per- fectly rendered architectural details, such as ornate cornices, art deco light fi xtures and plush seating. A viewing of Northern Light, a fi lm about Edmonton's history, in the theatre comes free with park entry. 10 WESTWORLD >> JUNE 2012 The new Capitol will also be mounting a noteworthy lineup of plays year-round. "Our mandate is to become a theatre that nourishes Edmonton's emerging talent," says artistic director Amanda Bergen. This July 19 to 26, a series of one-act comedies about "nutty characters who navigate the gauntlet of fi rst dates, jealous husbands and manipulative in-laws" takes the stage.
