Between October 2011 and March 2012, eight Alberta tech start-ups competed to develop a prototype for what may be the next evolution of AMA Road Reports. The goal? Find bet- ter ways to distribute up-to-the- minute data on road, traffi c and weather conditions. The competition, dubbed Skunkworks, was a joint under- taking between AMA and Startup Edmonton, a non-profi t group that helps new Alberta enterprises get off the ground. Ultimately, two teams stood out: development group Cinder, for its mobile good Samaritan application called Friendly, and University of Alberta consulting spin-off Darkhorse Analytics, for its predictive model- ing and forecasting system. AMA and Startup Edmonton are work- ing with both groups to turn their concepts into reality.
