F A L L 2 0 1 5 | W E S T W O R L D A L B E R T A 5 T he back-to-school season always makes me feel a little nostalgic for the early days of fall: learning new things, mastering new skills and embracing the feeling of newfound freedom that comes along with it. I remember like it was just yesterday, the first time I sat behind the wheel of a car as a fully licensed driver. It was the same kind of feeling – a feeling of freedom. Nothing standing between me and where I wanted to go – figuratively and liter- ally. I was reflecting on that memory as I read the stories in this issue about driver education. Peoples' relationships with their vehicles have evolved over time and, I imagine, will con- tinue to for years to come. From back in 1926 when AMA was getting started and vehicles were a new invention some thought wouldn't last, to today as more self-driving vehicles appear on the horizon, two things have remained constant: people love the freedom and mobility that comes with a vehicle, and we're there to help keep them safe. Protecting the safety and security of loved ones behind the wheel is something we take seriously and what we're recognized for being really good at. Driver education has been a staple of our membership offering for more than 75 years and we remain committed to delivering the highest quality product. Every year, over 12,000 students trust us to teach them the skills they need to feel safe and confident behind the wheel. Our driving school is one of the biggest in the country with the best trained instructors, more in-car, hands-on training than any other school, and a quality guarantee that we are proud to stand behind. While our commitment to creating safe drivers for life has remained unchanged, the ways people learn and the tools we use to teach them definitely has. Today we still offer the tradi- tional in-classroom setting for our novice drivers, but also Alberta's first online driver education solution. is gives students – and their parents – more flexibility and freedom, while being every bit as robust and challenging as our traditional in-classroom program. We also recognize that from time to time, drivers need to brush up on their skills behind the wheel, perhaps overcome some questionable habits or learn some new techniques, and we are always ready with a variety of refresher courses. From winter and RV driving to safe backing and managing fatigue, we'll make sure you're safe on the road. I've been driving now for more years that I care to count and I enjoy it to this day. As I imagine may also be true for you, driving gives me independence and freedom and I hope I'll be driving for many more years to come. We understand how important mobility is and we work hard to help keep seniors mobile longer. We've been working with health care profes- sionals and community leaders to find more ways to help seniors remain active and engaged in their community. We're piloting new ways to assess driver fitness, offering specialized driver training and we're helping volunteer driving organizations attract and retain qualified drivers to take seniors to medical and social appointments by covering the cost of their driver's abstract and recognizing drivers through our Driving Angels program. I hope you enjoy this issue of Westworld magazine and par- ticularly the article on driver education. I always love hearing from you, so if you have suggestions about how we can make our programs even better, please email me at don@ama.ab.ca.
