East Meets West Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is celebrated worldwide. The Indian Cultural Association of Canada welcomes the annual festival to Calgary with a cultural extrava- ganza at the Bowness Community League hall. About 1,200 people attend, mostly of South Asian descent, but the doors are open to all. "Every year, we're seeing more people from differ- ent backgrounds who've come to learn about our culture," says Ranjan Kumar, a Calgary orga- nizer. Check out the Bharatanatyam dance performances, rub elbows with local politi- cians, enjoy an authentic Indian buffet, and practice your Bollywood dance moves to DJ Rick's soundtrack. –Tracy Hyatt 10 W E S T W O R L D A L B E R T A | F A L L 2 0 1 5 (nuit blanche) mitch kern ART OF DARKNESS E dmonton's festivals usually take place during long days of sunshine. That was until executive chef Blake Flann parked his Leyland PD3 double-decker bus on the overgrown grass. Now the space is buzzing with diners hoping to snag one of 16 seats at PD3, Flann's mobile fine- dining restaurant. The dinner menu dabbles in contemporary, global flavours from Japan, England and Spain. Start with savoury churros, then on to a deconstructed cottage pie made with Alberta beef tenderloin and potatoes Dauphinoise. During the week, take-out street- food favourites like tacos and wraps are avail- able. Reservations accepted at dinner only. blakecanmore.com –T. H.
