For a one-time $35 fee, users have 24/7 access to the company's fl eet of cars in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver – as well as nine American cities. After the initial fee, members pay only for the time they use – 41 cents per minute, $15 per hour or $85 a day. Parking, gas, maintenance and insurance are included. Car2go covers park- ing in Parkplus spaces, Calgary Parking Authority lots, residential spots and several other designated areas. e biggest advantage of car2go over other car-sharing companies is convenience. Using a computer, app or 1-800 number, users can locate and reserve any car within car2go's designated home area. Magusiak says he rarely runs into problems booking a car. Anyone who works or lives in downtown Calgary knows that the little white and blue Smart cars – 550 to be exact – seem to be everywhere. Even if you can't fi nd a car exactly when you want it, it's usually only a matter of minutes before another becomes available. Car2go users' average trip time is under 30 minutes. "People use it to go out for dinner, to visit friends and to do general shopping," says Jon Wycoco, location manager of car2go Calgary. Driver Sumi Mark has her own vehicle and has been a car2go member since the company arrived in Calgary two years ago. Twice a week, she commutes to a downtown offi ce from her Bankview home – sometimes using car2go. She balks at the idea of giving up her Volkswagen GTI, saying she sees the car co-op as an alternative to taxis and buses. "It's cheaper than paying for a full day of park- ing," says Mark. e only downside for her is that she can't always book a car when she needs one during the morning and afternoon rush hours. " ere are peak demand times for car2go that occur throughout the day based on our members' everyday lifestyles and needs," says car2go's Wycoco. Car2go may get a green light for usability, but where it hits the proverbial red for some potential users is insurance – third-party liability in particular, which covers the other guy if you're at fault in a collision, and protects drivers fi nancially from legal action. Car2go's third-party liability, which is included in the fee, covers up to $300,000 per collision (up to $100,000 per person). Alberta's compulsory minimum coverage is $200,000.
