THE FAT BIKE TREND
Albertans must get creative in winter, especially since adverse
weather conditions call for practical solutions when it comes to
our tires, whatever our mode of transportation. Edmonton's
cyclists have discovered fat bikes, and even the police put them
to good use. Outlandishly wide, low-pressure tires empower
riders to float over snow and ice with aplomb. "It awakens the
inner kid," says Mike Sarnecki, director of the 45NRTH Fatbike
Triple Crown, a series of three races December 13, January 10
and February 7. Newbies and veterans alike can race the 15-km
loops through Edmonton's river valley – a winter wonderland
ideal for fat bike exploration. –Doug Horner
