Edmonton's cyclists have discovered fat bikes, and even the police put them to good use. Outlandishly wide, low-pressure tires empower riders to float over snow and ice with aplomb. "It awakens the inner kid," says Mike Sarnecki, director of the 45NRTH Fatbike Triple Crown, a series of three races December 13, January 10 and February 7. Newbies and veterans alike can race the 15-km loops through Edmonton's river valley – a winter wonderland ideal for fat bike exploration. –Doug Horner
