W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 | W E S T W O R L D A L B E R T A 5 since the 1930s and in all those years, there's never been a fatality at a crosswalk that our kids patrol. We're really proud of that – and of all the grade 5 and 6 students we've trained to be leaders at the crosswalk and inspired to be leaders in life. We regularly check in with you through surveys to find out what you think about traffic safety topics. We also conduct our own research and then advocate on your behalf for legislative changes on topics like distracted driving, seat belts and graduated driver licensing. You've helped influence just about every important piece of legislation that helps make our roads safer. We understand that to many, the ability to remain independently mobile even as we age is key to living a fulfilled life. It's impor- tant to us to support initiatives designed to make it possible for our members to stay active and engaged in the community. We've been piloting new ways to assess driver fit- ness, offering specialized driver training and helping volunteer driving organizations find qualified drivers to take people to and from medical and social appointments. We're also working to ensure that in these days of busy schedules, you have all the tools at your disposal to get you where you need to go safely and on time. Our new AMA Road Reporter app gives you real-time audio alerts regarding changes in road, traffic and surface conditions as well as notifications of upcom- ing school zones. Your safety on the road is of primary importance to us and we are working hard to make the AMA Road Reporter app the most comprehensive reporting tool in Alberta. We believe that this is important work and because of that, I'd like to say thank you. ank you for your trust in our organization. Your continued involvement and commit- ment, through your membership, makes our communities safer for everyone. As always, if you have ideas about what we can do to improve or thoughts around what we may already be doing well, I'd love to hear them. You can reach me by email at don@ama.ab.ca A t AMA we have always been about 'community': the communities we serve and the community of people that make up our membership. Although the programs and services we offer and the causes we advocate for have changed over time, the sense of community that drives our Association hasn't. I see it when our School Safety Patrollers are manning our crosswalks. I see it in the advance preparation our auto- motive team does in anticipation of the busy snowy months ahead. And I see it in the feed- back we receive and the comments we hear from our members. You – the community of AMA members – are very much a part of the decisions we make and the successes we achieve every day. At some point in the next year, our Asso- ciation will welcome its one millionth mem- ber. One-third of all Albertans will be a part of our community. at's quite an achieve- ment and, I have to say, it really is a privilege to represent and protect every member. It's also an obligation we take very seriously. Representing nearly a million Albertans means that we, collectively, are protecting, advocating and building a community of peo- ple from all walks of life, from the very young to those enjoying their post-work years. In fact this past September, we were very happy to introduce our new Kids Go Free benefit for members with Plus and higher membership types. By adding your kids to your member- ship, they not only get their own membership card but you get the peace of mind of know- ing that your children are protected from a roadside breakdown in any car they're in. It's just another way we're working to ensure that what means the most to you is protected by your membership in AMA. Since our incep- tion, one of the things we have been most concerned with protecting is the safety and security of our fellow Albertans so I thought I'd focus specifically on a few ways that we support our communities. Our AMA School Safety Patrol is now more than 80 years old. We've been funding the program and training those students Building Community A message from AMA's president Don Smitten President and CEO
