W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 | W E S T W O R L D A L B E R T A 37 Put down the phone Always look out at the road, not at your phone. "We see so many drivers not paying attention at all. We often see drivers in the morning talking on their phones, cellphone in one hand, not even hands-free." ere's so much activity happening in a school zone that patrollers need motorists to pay attention to the task at hand – driving. Cross at the crosswalk Mom and Dad, you're not setting a good example by jaywalking. Regardless of your age, young or old, please use the designated crosswalks. Jaywalking adds to the confusion of who's crossing where. "I had to tell one parent four times not to jaywalk because it's dangerous for everyone. That's when I learned that the fine can be as high as a couple hundred dol- lars, so telling them that definitely helped." Park away from school Parents who disregard No Parking signs contribute to congested school zones. "Most schools have a des- ignated zone away from the crosswalk for parents to use when dropping off and picking up their kids," says Habib, "but some people insist on parking where they shouldn't. Once we saw the police giving them all tickets. ey weren't happy, but the signs are there for safety reasons." W KIDS GO FREE BETWEEN FAMILY, friends and coaches, your kids get shuttled to activities in a lot of cars. Now you can make sure they don't get stranded at the side of the road, no matter whose car they're in. With Kids Go Free you can get your kids an AMA card of their very own. It's free with your Primary Plus or Premier Membership. Go to ama.ab.ca/KidsGoFree for more info. What is it exactly? It's a free added benefit for members with a Plus or higher AMA mem- bership. So when a nanny, coach, friend or neighbour is driving your child from point A to point B, and the car breaks down, we'll be there to help. For added safety, if your child makes a roadside assistance call, we'll contact you to let you know they're safe and that we're on the way to help them get back on the road. How does it all work? It's simple. As a Plus or higher AMA member, you'll be able to share your membership benefits with your kids. All you have to do is regis- ter your children (15 years old and under) on your Plus or Premier membership. Kids in your household can be added at any time of year and every child you add will get a card of their own with their very own membership number. And because you're a Plus or Premier member, your kids will get most of the same roadside assistance and partner savings benefits that you do. Not a Plus or Premier member? Not to worry. You can still get the benefits of Kids Go Free by upgrad- ing your Basic membership to CAA Plus. With it, everyone gets way more coverage – like 160 km of towing (compared to 5 km with your Basic membership), more money towards vehicle unlocks and even free fuel and delivery if the car runs out of gas. W DRIVING Tried and Tested Buying the right tires for your vehicle can be a daunting task. You may have firmly decided on winter tires because you do a lot of high- way driving, but how do you know Brand X tires perform better than Brand Y? It's not easy and the truth is there hasn't been an easy way for shoppers to do side-by-side comparisons until now. "Most of the current testing data available today comes from tire manufacturers them- selves. As a result, manufac- turers can be selective in the data they release," says Greg Waring, vice-president marketing, Kal Tire. In response, Kal Tire launched an independent tire testing program last winter, becoming the first tire retailer to do its own testing in Canada, beyond what manufacturers do. A team comprised of rally champions, advanced driving instructors and vehicle devel- opment testers tested popular winter tires, all-weather and all-seasons (also known as three-seasons) in a variety of winter road conditions in ten categories, such as braking, slush traction and cornering. As expected, winter tires per- formed better in most of the categories. Winter tires, for example, stopped up to 33 per cent sooner on ice than all seasons. Kal Tire shoppers can now see how different brands compare in controlled testing. "Having this indepen- dent and objective data pro- vides another level of information," says Waring. "We're sharing all the data so it can be compared side-by- side." Armed with this new data and advice from Kal Tire's experts, consumers can be more confident that they are getting the right tire for their driving needs. Shop for tires at Kal Tire and save $50 on a set of 4 tires (can be used with manufactur- er's rebate). Plus save 25% on tire storage and 10% on mechani- cal parts and labour. AMARewards.ca/ KalTire
