iStock A Destination Wedding How-To When considering a wedding abroad, the fi rst order of business is to ask: is a destination wedding right for me? "It's for brides who don't mind handing the details to someone else. They have to be easygoing," says Laurie Bourgeois, AMA wedding specialist. Once that's settled, read on for a list of things to keep in mind when planning a nuptial getaway. What's included Most resort wedding packages include an onsite co-ordinator, an offi ciant, a bouquet, cake, music, dinner and wine. Photos and video typically cost extra. Group excursions must be booked in advance and are rarely part of the deal, though the resort may be able to assist with the planning. Book early Wedding groups generally stay for a week to 10 days, though the couple might choose to stay on longer for some alone time. "The busiest time for booking the wedding trip is March to May, when most of the tour operators are putting out promo- tions to try and fi ll their space for the following wedding is planning the celebration site- unseen. So fi rst, ask the resort or wedding planner for photos of past weddings. This will give you an idea of whether the place suits your taste when it's all decked out. Supply photos of wedding decor you like, since words such as "romantic" and "dreamy" can be interpreted in myriad ways. Next, ask about the wedding packages and rates. What can be customized? Who will oversee the planning at the resort? winter season," says Bourgeois. To avoid having to compromise on your location, book as early as possible, she adds. "Most resorts only do one to three weddings per day, depending on the size of the resort." Since the number of guests will affect cost and availability, have approximate numbers before talking with a wedding planner or group travel specialist. Give your guests ample notice and be mindful that not everyone you invite will attend. What to ask The number-one challenge of a destination Are there group accommodation rates available for you and your guests? How far is the airport from the wedding site, and will transportation be provided? Also stress the importance of legal docu- ments. Inquire about the papers needed to ensure that a legal ceremony takes place (a non-legal ceremony is always an option, but then you'll have to do the real deal back home). Ask whether a notary and translator will be pres- ent to ensure the marriage certifi cates are legal and properly fi led, or whether you have to do this yourself. WESTWORLD >> FEBRURARY 2012 31
