EXTERIOR: COAT TO PROTECT Just as winter can be hard on a vehicle's insides, it's tough on the outside, too. Romesh Jay, general manager of The Car Salon in Calgary, recommends a few treatments to deal with seasonal dangers, from rock chips and salt to ice. First, a synthetic paint protection wax should be applied yearly. This defends against salt and ice, keeps the clear coat from going dull and prevents the formation of rust on new vehicles –or, in the case of vehicles where rust has already started, slows the process. An oil-based rust- check coating should also be applied annually, under the chassis and inside the panels; areas where rust often starts. Finally, a tar-based undercoating, which often lasts for the life of the vehicle, will prevent damage to the underside from salt and rocks. WINDOWS: Reduce glare E ven with sub-zero temperatures outside, the sun's rays re ecting o snow can create glare that impacts visibility. Products such as Llumar win- dow lm can be applied to rear and back- passenger windows to help cut glare (windshields and front windows legally can't be tinted, however).
