embark on a quest to find some neighbours of ours from Calgary – Beth and her kids, Jacob, 11, and Sarah, 10 – who are staying at their summer cabin at the other end of Shuswap Lake. We make our way north, navigating through the tight channel – in some spots, it's less than 30 metres across – at Sicamous, between Shuswap and Mara lakes. It takes nearly two hours of puttering, but we find them relaxing on their ski boat near a small, timber-framed cabin. The adults spend the afternoon catching up, laughing and throwing back a few cold ones on the houseboat, while the kids engage in what may be one of the most raucous sliding-andswimming sessions in history. A couple of hours before dark, we say our goodbyes, chug back to Mara Lake – arriving minutes before nightfall – and hit the beach for our final campfire. (Tomorrow at noon the boat has to go back to Twin Anchors.) A few marshmallows later and it's time to turn out the lights. But . . . I didn't. My first clue is the quiet. Nothing is beeping. Nothing is humming. Strange. I roll out of bed and shuffle to the control area, where I quickly realize my mistake: the power-sucking navigational lights have been on all night. Thankfully, help – in the form of a quick boost from Twin Anchors' rescue boat – is just a cellphone call away. "I'll be there within an hour," the friendly voice on the other end replies. The morning is by no means a lost cause. The kids still have their Corn Pops. My wife still has her coffee, albeit iced, and her 3G. And I still have a golf course 50 steps away.
