Stepping It Up
Do you have a favourite place to take a stroll
in our picturesque province? Well, now's
your chance to make it known. To mark the
75th anniversary of the AMA School Safety
Patrol, AMA is compiling a list of the 75 best
places to walk in Alberta. Maybe it's the lush
foliage that makes your spot special. Or the
mountain view. To get you on your way, here
are a few of our favourites:
Wonderful wander:
the Edmonton
River Valley.
Birchwood Trails, Fort McMurray.
Winding through 120 kilometres of dense
boreal forest that teems with wildlife, these
10 trails are all named after animals.
Bow Valley Ranch Trails, Calgary.
City slickers get a dose of nature on this trail
network in Fish Creek Provincial Park. Peckish
hikers can pad into Ranche Restaurant for
fine dining or Annie's Bakery & Café for a
quick nibble.
McKenzie Trail, Red Deer. What once
were humble gravel pits are now an idyllic
oasis. After you've meandered through
meadows and spruce forest, settle in beside
McKenzie Pond for a picnic.
City Centre Trail, Edmonton. Part of the
expansive River Valley, this trail in the City
Centre Zone is a verdant urban paradise.
Access it downtown and follow the river east,
crossing paths with Segways before arriving
at a Chinese garden in Louise McKinney
Riverfront Park.
