SAN FRANCISCO Blessed by a year-round growing climate within an orange's throw of some of the finest agricultural land and vineyards in the world, not to mention the bounty of the Pacific coast, it's no wonder that San Francisco was the birthplace of the farm-to-table movement. Diners of all stripes are spoiled for choice in the City by the Bay. Down-home comfort food like that served at The Old Clam House (San Francisco's oldest restaurant) and Emmy's Spaghetti Shack – both located in the quaint, artsy neighbourhood of Bernal Heights – draw just as many fans as the revered temples of contemporary gastronomy, such as Russian Hill's Gary Danko. Roast chicken at Zuni Café, pork tamales from El Buen Comer and dumplings at any number of restaurants in Chinatown (the largest outside Asia) are not just some of the best dishes in San Francisco, but in the world. Chez Panisse: The original farm-to-table restaurant, from chef and cookbook author Alice Waters, remains as fresh today as when it opened in 1971 in Berkeley.
